Big Brothers Big sisters of Montana provides children facing adversity with strong, enduring, professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

Statement:

We believe that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Most children served by BBBS are low-income and face challenges at home and at school. Local and national data suggest that 2-3 hours per week of thoughtful, caring, respectful mentoring increase self-confidence and trust in community members, while decreasing truancy and use of drugs and alcohol. We empower children.

How we help:

At the time that Travis (Big) was matched with his Little, Kyle had never met his incarcerated father. Prior to meeting his Big, Kyle had gravitated toward a group of friends that tended toward trouble in the neighborhood. By becoming a Big, Travis agreed to be the positive influence Kyle needed in his life and to help him see his own self-worth and to model alternate activities and friendships.

Travis bought Kyle a toolbox and taught him how to use all of the essentials for mechanical and woodworking projects. He also shared his passion for fishing. Fly fishing became a huge part of their Big-Little bond. “When I’m tempted to do some mischievous things with kids in my neighborhood, I just take my fishing pole and ride my bike to Ashley Creek and wet a line.” Travis’ commitment to being there for Kyle and believing in his potential helped give Kyle the courage to say no to the easy route and to choose his own path full of promising opportunities.
